Sexual Abuse Victims Groups Criticise Pope's 'cynical' Meeting

Pope Benedict met victims of sexual abuse by the Catholic clergy in the last hours of his nine-day visit to Australia, underlining his earlier public apology for the pain they have suffered.

But his efforts have been criticized by victims support groups, who accused the church of "stage managing" the meeting, choosing people who would not speak out and labeling it a cynical public relations exercise.

The Pope held a private mass in a chapel at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney and then spoke privately with four representatives of abuse victims – two men and two women - for around an hour "as an expression of his ongoing pastoral concern for those who have been abused by members of the church," the Vatican said in a statement.

Shark Species Face Extinction Amid Overfishing and Appetite for Fins

Nine more shark species added to endangered list as scientists warn of extinction threat

Nine more species of shark are to be added to the endangered list as scientists warn that oceans are being emptied of the fish by overfishing and finning.

The scalloped hammerhead shark, which has declined by 99% over the past 30 years in some parts of the world, is particularly vulnerable and will be declared globally endangered on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) list.

"Sharks are definitely at the top of the list for marine fishes that could go extinct in our lifetimes," said Julia Baum of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California and a member of IUCN shark specialist group. "If we carry on the way that we are, we're looking at a really high risk of extinction for some of these shark species within the next few decades."

So, I ask myself why should we continue making any efforts to stop shark fishing and to fund shark conservation organizations. This question however has taken me on a very long and interesting journey: a journey of discovery and reawakening, both ecologically as well as personally.

A couple of months ago, I went to this sleepy little town in Ecuador, known all over the world for its diving opportunities. While in the small town, it became very obvious to me that there were many sharks in the small town that were being hauled dead by the local fishermen, on a daily basis. But it took me a while to notice that I never really saw any sharks when I was diving. Not a single, solitary shark did I see in all those days that I spent in that sleepy little town diving. So, I asked myself why?
